When I wrote my thesis on the design of things, I had the opportunity to think a lot about what should be done as a manifesto for our times. The more you think about it, the more abstract the words become and the more you tend to fall into the 'ought' argument, well, that is important sometimes.
In a concrete sense, 'design' means planning a thing or thing and designing an object or system with the performance to match it. Then, if possible, make it, operate it, create functions and values that were not there, and fulfil something. Ideally, therefore, one should put oneself in the system and think thoroughly about what is missing, why to make it and what to make. In practice, these are sometimes predetermined by the client, and sometimes, if we are lucky, we decide together.
モノの設計について論文を書いたときに、時代のマニフェストとして何をすべきか、ということに関してよくよく考える機会があった。頭でっかちでは考えれば考えるほど言葉は抽象的になっていき、べき論に陥ってしまいがちである。が、しかしまあ、そういうのもたまには大事である。
具体的な意味においての「設計」とは、モノやコトを企てて、それに合う性能のモノやシステムをデザインする。そして、できれば、作り、運用して、そこになかった機能・価値を作り、企てた何かを満たす。したがって、理想的には自身がその系に身を置いて、何が足りないか、なぜ作るか、何を作るかということを考えるのがよい。実務においては、これらをクライアントによって予め凡そきめられていることもあるし、運がよければ一緒に決めていくこともある。設計と一言にのべても、包括的には議論できないほど多様な仕事がある。
日本はヘンテコな建物が多い、外国人にうける。今までに見たことのないヘンテコな建物、そういったものを作り続けて、メディアにしこしこ投稿するはがき職人のことを日本では建築家と呼ぶらしい。
なぜ、そういったものを希求する・されるのか、それは当事者も消費者もメディアも暇だからである、もっと悪意のない言い方をするなら強迫神経症である。私が特にそのような病的な雰囲気をかんじる業界は、テレビなどもよい例である、プログラムの枠があるから流している、深夜の通販番組、伝えたいことはなにもないが、枠はある。ファッション雑誌、それほど服やメイクを変えてなんになる、毎年色相環の中から微妙にトレンドをずらして流行りの化粧品が移り変わっていく。もっともファッションブランドも価値低下を防ぐために売れ残りを大量廃棄していたらしいが、それももうやめるらしい。
某有名大家が言ったように建築も消費物として経済を回さなくてはならないのであろうか？
日本でいうところの建築家は暇人をたきつける香具師的側面が強すぎる。また、ヘンなものを作らないといけない脅迫はどこから来るのだろう、旧来の拘束条件が重力であれば、構造体が浮いているとか、軽く見せるとか、あるいはフォーマルではないとされる文化的コンテクストに反抗するとか、そういった毒にも薬にもならないことに拘泥する。パンクなんだな。
ひと世代昔に本当にチャレンジングだったマニフェストが、世代変わりして何をやっていたのかが分からなくなったというのが正直なところであろう。こういった盲目的な先例踏襲主義というか、受験文化が本来のアーキテクトの矮小化を招いているのではないか。
では、ところで小さな（おおきくてもいい）建築が、社会を変革する力があるのだろうか。と問いをたてたとしよう。

（社会とは何だろうか、なぜ社会をかえないといけないのかに関してはこの際、神だなの奥に仕舞っておこう）もっと親しみやすい言葉でいうなら、より良い人工環境をもたらすことができるだろうか？「社会」を経済的な成功、という側面でとらえるなら、いくつかの部分的な成功はあるかもしれない、郊外の巨大スーパー、証券取引所。そういえば、経済的成功も定義しなくてはならない、数年間の商業的黒字で設計料がペイできれば成功とするなら、例をあげられるだろう。ビルバオの美術館でもよいし、郊外のコーヒーチェーン店でもよい。これらの定義も実は怪しい、経済的な成立が建築物の成功というのは短絡的すぎるし、コーヒーショップが閉店した後の撤去費用も含めてライフサイクルでコスト収支をとるのか、ではセントポール寺院の収支はどう測るのか。
私が英国で学んだ、アーキテクトの仕事は、小文字では確かにモノの設計である場合もあるが、大文字での秩序の発見か、あるいは創出である。だが、もっと真摯な意味で人間の住み、働き、憩う環境をよりよくしようとしたときには、なにを作ればいいのだろうか。どんな意味においても、現代の都市は何か不健康であるように思える。では、この不完全な都市環境をどうしていくべきなのか、いろいろな学問や産業と協力して見つけていくくとが、しごとであると信じている。
I/You can shift your perspective and start with a more familiar realisation. What artefacts in my life recently have had a decisive influence on my behaviour? As far as I am concerned, in the last few days, I would not have behaved in this way without them: high-speed transport such as planes, trains and cars; food, restaurants and services that are exchanged in money without having to produce it myself; and later, communication means such as the internet, which absolutely changed the way I work, and the It is an ecosystem of huge services, etc. In other industrial sectors, it is easier to talk in lights because you are not in them.
For the sake of argument, let's take the automotive story a little deeper. What were the biggest trends and technological events from 2010 to the 2020s in relation to the car industry, as mentioned in other columns? Many events come to mind: hybrid cars and diesel, and their cheating, globalisation, corporate alliances across national levels and their frictions, drive-by-wire, automated driving, connected cars, etc.
Rather than talking in the abstract, discussions about how that car is sexy or how you want this car may feel more familiar and personal to you. (However, let's leave aside for the moment the discussion of luxury cars and special vehicles that can't be bought no matter how hard you try, as it will get sidetracked into the discussion of prices and market principles.) It may be possible to say that the car or manufacturer that you had a longing for was a personal experience, and from this it may be possible to deduce what the interests of society were and what was important in designing the car.
To read trends beyond personal experience, it might be a good idea to look at the World Car Awards WCA, for example: in the early 2010s, the Polo (VW, 2010) and the R8 (Audi, 2010) were lined up, analogous to discussions on how to boil down the standard petrol engine car. It is analogous to the discussion on how to boil down a standard petrol-engined car. It is analogous to the fact that there were a number of these cars in the line-up. In fact, these were very good cars. However, the award-winning models soon shifted to those that were taking on environmental and power issues head-on, such as the Leaf (Nissan, 2011), Chevrolet Volt (GM, 2011), etc.
What were the key events (from the user's perspective) and technological events (from the designer's perspective) in the automotive industry from 2010 to the 2020s? Many events come to mind: for the former, the SUV boom for the second time in my life, the gradual increase in the level of assistance from navigation to automated driving, and the rise in the price of the vehicle itself. Conversely, the latter include the battle between hybrid and diesel cars and their emissions cheating, corporate alliances beyond the national level, globalisation and its frictions, drive-by-wire, automated driving, connected cars and so on.

From the manufacturer's point of view, "the power may change, or the engine may remain, and so on, and we have to deal with both" is a fundamental technological change. However, if you think about it in the framework of the 'vehicle' used by the user, other than the experience of refuelling with petrol and recharging with electricity, not much has changed. Alternatively, they are made to be so different that they can be ridden with the same licence. As far as the user experience of a vehicle is concerned - 'getting in the car and going somewhere' or 'being able to freely go anywhere you want, at any time you want' - it is certainly an experience not so different from that of an engine.
視点をずらして、もっと身近な気づきからでもよい。最近の自分の生活中で、私の行動に決定的に影響を与えたアーティファクトはなんだろうか。私がこの数日で、これがなかったらこんな行動をとってないよなと思うことに関しては、飛行機、電車、自動車などの高速交通手段、自分で作らなくとも貨幣でやり取りする食品、レストラン、サービス、後は絶対的に働き方を変えたインターネットなどの通信手段と、その上に横たわる巨大なサービスなどの生態系である。他の産業分野であれば、自分が中にいない分、ライトに語りやすくなる。
ためしに、自動車で少し話を深めてみようかなと考える。わたしは田舎生まれが理由なのか、自由なイメージが好きなのか、とにかく自動車というものに、他のアーティファクトとは一味違った思い入れがある。あるいは私は１９８０年代生まれなので、自動車は庶民が保有しているのがある程度は日常化していたが、東京にある江戸博物館の昭和の中頃のブースを見ていると、昔の人は、自動車（マンションなども）がまさにそういった明るく・自由な生活のイメージの照射対象として機能していたのが分かる。
抽象的なはなしよりも、あの車がシブいだとか、この車が欲しいとか言う雑談のほうが身近に感じて自分事にできるかもしれない。なぜほしかったんだろう、そのとき何を考えていたんだろう。（もっとも、どうあがいても買えないほどの競技車・高級車・特殊車両についてはとりあえず置いておく）。ほしいなあとおもっていたくるま、あるいはメーカーというのは、個人の体験としていえるかもしれないし、そこから演繹的に、社会での関心ごとと、設計にあたってなにが大切だったのかということを導き出せるかもしれない。

個人の体験を超えたトレンドを読むには、たとえば世界自動車賞WCAなどを見ていくというのもいいかもしれない。2010年代初頭は、Polo(VW, 2010)や、 R8(Audi, 2010)などが並んでおり、スタンダードなガソリンエンジン車を、どのように煮詰めていくかという観点で議論がされていたと類推される。などが並んでいたと類推される。実際に、これらはとても良い車であった。しかし、そのうちLeaf (Nissan, 2011), Chevrolet Volt (GM,2011), などの環境・動力問題に正面切ってチャレンジしているものに受賞車種が変わっていく。
自動車産業にて、2010年から2020年代までで、重要だった出来事（ユーザー目線）、と技術的出来事（設計者目線）は何だっただろうか。出来事はいろいろと浮かぶ、前者に関しては、私の人生で２回目のSUVブームだとか、カーナビから自動運転へ徐々にアシストのレベルが上がってきたこと、また本体価格の上昇などである。反対に、後者に関してはハイブリッドカーとディーゼルの攻防、そしてその排ガス不正、国家のレベルを超えた企業連合やグローバル化、その軋み、ドライブバイワイヤ、自動運転、コネクテッドカーなどが頭に浮かぶ。

作る側からすれば、「動力が変わる、あるいはエンジンも残るかもしれない、それ等両方に対応しなければならない」というのは技術的に根本的な変革である。しかしユーザーが使う「乗り物」の枠で考えるなら、ガソリン給油と電力チャージの体験以外は、そう変わらない。あるいは、同じ免許で乗れるように、そう変わらないように作ってある。「車に乗ってどこかへ行く」とか「好きな時間に、自由に好きな場所へ行くことができる」というクルマのユーザーエクスペリエンスとしては、エンジンとそう変わらない体験であることも確かである。
政治やエネルギーにかかわる問題は大きすぎる。大体の方向をさしていたとしても、それが政略であるかないか、わからない。ふと引っかかるのは皆、多かれ少なかれ商売をやっていることである。政治的な思惑や、ルールチェンジなどと言いながら、結局、商売がやりたいというのであれば、なんとか理解の範囲に収まる。しかし、わかりにくいのはイデオロギーのために、技術そのものに夢を抱くひともいる。
自分は商売をやりたいと思ったことはないが、日本で教育を受けたものは、とりあえずの流れがある、学業を終えると、どこかの企業に就職して商売を行う。あるいは一見商売でなく見える場合もある。たとえば役人、医者、ただし労働の対価はお金であることが多い。大半の人間はお金を対価に、お金にかかわる仕事をすることになる、浅いのか深いのか、資本主義の社会であろうか、マイナーな国、政治体制が違う国、あるいは田舎などを通りかかかると世界が必ずしもこういった仕組みで流れていないことに気づく。
